10 Tips To Make Small Spaces Work
No matter how small your apartment is, nothing beats having your own space in NYC. Below are some practical tips and tricks to help tackle the most commonly faced issue in New York, the space, or lack thereof!
- STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE!! When purchasing furniture, think smart. Bedside tables with drawers and cupboards, a trunk as a coffee table and hollow stools with lids, are the perfect place to pile your belongings.
- Sofa Beds – Lucky enough to have a seperate living room? Double it as a bedroom! There are some great sofa beds on the market. Perfect for when a friend unexpectedly drops in.
- Be resourceful when buying a bed. One that’s raised off the ground allows for space underneath to store large bulky items that take up valuable closet space.
- Try a Pull Out – Living in a studio? Need an extra bed? Get a pull out! It’s a large drawer on wheels that slides under your bed. Not only are they great to store items in, but you can buy and install a mattress within, creating an extra place for someone to sleep.
- If you’re in a studio, attach a curtain on track system either around your bed or in your kitchen. Once the shade is draw it creates the feel of a seperate room.
- Makeshift Table – All it takes is a piece of plywood, shelf holders and and some screws. Attach it to your wall and you’ve got yourself a schmick new dining table for under $50!
Tip – Buy hangers that fold, that way you can store your table once done!
- If you can, install a sliding door as oppose to the traditional swing doors. They are a great space saver and still do the trick.
- Install hooks and shelving on your walls. It’s a cheap and efficient way to take advantage of empty wall space. Additionally you can hang larger items like a bike, sporting accessories, bags, etc.
