According to OSHA , there are nearly 6.5 million people working at approximately 252,000 construction sites across the nation on any given day, so we all need to play our part to ensure a healthy and safe workplace.
There’s no denying it, COVID-19 has brought about a new world of health and safety in construction. While job sites have always had strict protocol around these health and safety procedures, now more than ever are we seeing enhanced requirements enforced by the local, state and federal bodies.
We’ve been reviewing the protocol put forth by the CDC, OSHA, New York State and others and have some top tips that our team is ensuring are met on our job sites.
- Instruct those who are feeling unwell to stay home.
- Where it is possible, limiting access on the worksite to only essential workers.
- Advising workers to refrain from using other workers’ phones, desks, or other work tools and equipment.
- Ensuring workers equipment is disinfected regularly.
- Worksites will be flexible and allow telecommuting and staggered shifts, if feasible.
- Surfaces, equipment, and other elements of the work environment will be regularly cleaned and disinfected surfaces.
- Protective masks will be worn by all workers while on-site. If the site is deemed to have been exposed to COVID19, then additional Personal Protective Equipment is considered a necessity. This includes (and is not limited to) a N95 mask, protective eyewear, plastic clothing, rubber gloves and sheeting to certain areas of the job-site.
- Workers are to frequently wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Hands to be washed every time you enter and exit the job site.
- When soap and running water are unavailable, workers are to use an alcohol-based hand rub with at least 60% alcohol.
- Always wash hands that are visibly soiled.Workers must avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Workers must display excellent respiratory etiquette onsite.
- Any coughs and sneezes to be covered.
- Doors are to be closed and walls used as physical barriers to separate workers from any individuals under voluntary or required self-quarantine or isolation or who are experiencing signs and/or symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
- The practise of safe physical distancing measures – keeping 6 feet apart – by all workers onsite.
